This work is part of a series examines relationships to the life, use, and death of horses as revered among the farm animal kingdom. As a young girl Anna Louise Richardson wished for the dream horse and life in the saddle. This golden idealism was tempered by the practical realities of her upbringing with a veterinarian mother performing tasks such as castrating foals and putting horses down when it was time. The series Gelded is her exploration of the romantic allure of horses, severed from their reality as just another farm animal.
