Wonder Horse depicts a life size rendition of Phar Lap's heart, exploring the ongoing significance of Phar Lap in the Australian public imagination. This work dissects the anatomy and career of Australia’s most iconic racehorse to discuss the considerable cultural investment in the legend of Phar Lap since his mysterious death in 1932. While the physical remains can be unsettling, they reveal a complex relationship between the celebration of a cultural icon and the distribution of Phar Lap’s body parts after his death around Australia and New Zealand. His extraordinarily large heart was preserved and now stands as a symbol of national identity at the National Museum of Australia.
