Anna Louise Richardson's work explores subjective views of horses, bringing together elements of personal history with broader rural and cultural narratives. Some bodies of work describe family horses that were idolised but less than perfect in reality, offering nostalgic and light-hearted portraits through the lens of adolescence. Others depict the horse as the subject of a glorious portrait in contrast to the reality of the horse as a source of food. Rationalising the horse as a reflection of our own anthropomorphic ideals, these works create a dialogue to consider the parallels between idealism and pragmatism in how horses are dealt with by people.
